What do I need to bring for the Yoga Training ?
- Yoga Mat
- Yoga Belt
- If you have a string of 108 mala beads you may bring them for chanting: These beads are not mandatory but helpful for your own personal practice of mantra
- Comfortable exercise clothes: for example – lycra shorts, tank tops, sports exercise wear or casual rayon or cotton wear (please note: with due respect to “Thai Culture” – bikini bottoms or tops are not appropriate in the yoga classes or restaurant) . It is appropriate for female yoga students to tie a sarong around their yoga shorts when going to the restaurant on the land with respect to the Thai staff. The school prefers that the students get their yoga shorts before coming to Thailand since the exercise shorts sold in Thailand are not appropriate wear for the yoga classes. Shorts need to have an appropriate length (at least 4-5 inches from the top of the thigh) to respectfully practice particular asanas.
- Journal or Exercise Notebook for journal writing
- Notebooks: separate notebook on Hatha & Pranayama Yoga; another note book for Chakra Theory & Yoga Philosophy / These are suggestions regarding the organization of your notes. Study cards for chakra exams have been helpful for the students.
- Colored Markers for Raja Yoga Mandala Coloring. If you like to color mandalas and have some on hand you are welcomed to bring them along to share . Coloring blank mandala pictures is very good for centering one’s self as well as activating the chakras & channeling the energy body. We will hand out some blank mandala drawings as well.
- body. We will hand out some blank mandala drawings as well.
Recommended Anatomy books are:
(Note: these books are not mandatory to buy for the course but definitely recommended for self-study as a yoga teacher)
*Atlas of Skeletal Muscles by Robert Stone & Judith Stone
(this book is very clear and concise for the anatomy of bones & muscles)
Anatomy of Movement by Blandine Calais-Germain
Chakra Yoga Books:
Eastern Body Western Mind (Psychology of the Chakras) Anodea Judith
(Highly recommend this book * We use this book along with our yoga teacher’s manual in the study of the chakras)
The Seven- Fold Journey Anodea Judith & Selene Vega (not mandatory)
Yoga Philosophy books:
Bhagavad Gita by Eknath Easwaran or Christopher Isherwood or other authors
Yoga Sutras: Light on the Yoga Sutras by B.K.S. Iyengar or other authors on the Yoga Sutras )
NOTE:These books are not mandatory to bring to the training but the student needs to be somewhat familiar with these yogic philosophical studies before you join the training * Perhaps have a look in your local library for readings on the Yoga Sutras, The Bhagavagita or other philosophical studies on Yoga such as writings by Sivananda or Vishnu Devananda as well. Yoga Traditon by Georg Feuerstein.
Auto-biography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda (recommended but not mandatory)
(The Auto-biography of a Yogi is an excellent small paperback travel book by the revered Indian Yogi named Yogananda. This book covers his life in India and relays stories about the teachings of the Science of Yoga as well as introduces the renowned Saints & Teacher’s he met along his path : Highly Recommended on the reading list for travel)
3. AUTO-BIOGRAPY:
The student is requested to bring a 3-6 page written auto-biography of your background ( ie: place of birth, family, any significant events in your life
that you feel we should be aware of ) . This information is confidental between the two principal instructors of the yoga training (David & Marina) and is useful to allow us to know you better / to be of more help to you personally during the program.
4. Suggestions of Supplements to bring to Thailand to keep your immune system high:
For those of you wanting to bring some supplements to sustain you during all the Hatha Yoga & Pranayama Yoga practice as well as to keep your immune system at a good optimum against foreign bacteria …..some suggestions are:
- Garlic Capsules 2 capsules in morning & at night in Thailand…keeps the parasites away as well as boosts the immune system
- Black Walnut Tincture: Anti-parisitic supplement taken on an empty stomach
- Grapefruit Seed Extract : (good boost for the immune system & neutralizing for bacteria; antiseptic; anti-parasitic) 3-4 drops in a few ounces of water or juice per day or on your salads
- Emergence-C Electrolytes : to keep your mineral content balanced in the body especially if you find you are releasing a lot of sweat thru the Hatha Yoga practice & heat. You can find these electrolyte salts at the pharmacy on the island of Koh Pha Ngan in Thailand as well.
- Oil of Oregano: Good immune booster as well / Very Good to Ward of Parasites & Bacterias
- Charcoal Tablets are great for stomach cramps/digestion problems
- Acidophilus: it is a great practice to take acidophilus for at least a month or 6 weeks before traveling/ helps to build the immune system to deal with foreign bacteria
(Realize that the above list of supplements are only suggestions and not mandatory. If you can get a few items we recommend the Garlic capsules & Oil of Oregano…start taking these supplements daily once you arrive in Thailand and then you can take the Oil of Oregano a few times a week once your immune system is built up but garlic capsules daily)
Note: For those of you who are not strictly vegetarian we do not recommend the eating of pork or chicken anywhere in Thailand… many times these foods spend a lot of time in the heat before cooked and are not always cooked thoroughly. This can cause much sickness. Charcoal tablets are good to combat this sickness. In our Tree-tops restaurant menu we have for protein tofu, brown rice, beans, eggs, cashew nuts, great salads & some fish.
5. Detox Cleanse to Boost YOUR Immune System: J
We request that you do a detox cleanse in the Fall or Summer as preparation for your immune system and then begin to boost your immune system with some of the suggestions listed below.
It is very helpful to boost your immune system before coming to South East Asia. . This will help you ward off any curious, bacterial visitors. We recommend that you Do Not do a colonic cleanse or enemas just before arriving in Thailand for you will loose a lot of your friendly bacteria in the large intestine. We suggest then you do a cleanse in the late Fall & then take acidophilus/bifidus for at least a month before your flight to Asia.
The acidophilus will help build up your friendly bacteria again before travel. As well, take you garlic supplements, grapefruitseed extract or oil of oregano once you arrive in Thailand to give time for your system to acclimatize.

More Travel Tips & Suggestions of things to pack:
Cargo
If you do intend to bring any of these supplements to Thailand we suggest that you put them in your cargo luggage. All that is recommended is definitely your choice only and not mandatory.
Sharp Objects: Please note that any sharp objects such as nail clippers, nail files, tweezers, traveling pocket-knife etc. is best kept in your cargo luggage. The security will confiscate them if you have them in you carry-on luggage.
Liquids: For Travel, these days the airports are checking for liquids in carry-on luggage. You can take liquids in 100 ml bottles and all the liquids must be placed in a zip-lock bag to show security.
Pocket-Knife: great to cut your fruit etc. (available on Koh Pha Ngan)
Flashlight : you will need a flash-light to travel to and from the night classes in the Pyramid Yoga Studio as well as for your own personal outings
Mosquito Repellent: a blend of tea tree oil and citronella oil is good as a natural repellent, even citronella oil on its own is good. Lavender oil is a good anti-septic for abrasions and mosquito bites. Various mosquito repellents are available on the island. Mosquitoes are significantly less in dry season (mid-January to April )….. except they can be plentiful during sunset.
It is important to avoid the intake of too much sugar, sweet body fluids attracts the mosquitos: hence a detox-cleanse is helpful.
White tiger balm is excellent for mosquito bites. It stops the itching and is also good for the muscles.
Top Bed-Sheet:
Please bring a flat-top bedsheet for your cabins/ beach towel
Towel: All the cabins are at budget rates so towels are not provided . You can purchase your bath towels in the main town on the island of Koh Pha Ngan.
Ear-plugs:
Ear-plugs are essential for traveling in Bangkok, on the trains & buses and sometimes for meditation in your bungalow. We would highly recommend you bring some. Eye-pillows are great for the relaxation pose in your morning practice as well as for the trains & guest houses.
Camping pillow:
A camping pillow that you can stuff into a small sack is nice for traveling on the buses or for relaxation in your hammock. More of a comfort thing J
Sunscreen (available on the island)
Water – Bottle bag or holder is helpful.
Yoga-Mat Bag for traveling to & from your bungalow/cabin
Long-sleeve blouse or jacket is good to bring. At night ,if you are riding on one of the bikes or taxi trucks it can be very cool with the wind effect. The long-sleeve blouse is helpful in the sun as well. You can get sun-hats here. J
Snorkeling gear is available on the island for sale or rent. There are beautiful snorkeling reefs to explore or you can bring your own which is more convenient. J Rental: 150 Baht per 6 hours
Goggles & Nose-Clip are fun to have for swimming.
MP3 Player or Lap-Top:
If you plan to carry a CD player (in the old days) in your carry-on luggage make sure the batteries work in these players. You will sometimes have to show security if they are operating. If the batteries do not work, the CD player may be confiscated for security reasons. Same goes for a lap-top computer….it must show that it is working at the security gate or it may be taken away.
Sandals are the best walking gear unless you plan to do some hiking. Some people prefer to have runners when riding the motor-bikes around the island. It is safer. Runners are available to buy here (cheaper)… Also if you do plan on renting a motor-bike we highly recommend that you use a helmet. It is quite dangerous biking on the back roads. There are many motor-cycle accidents each year but we can give you some tips that work for us….when you arrive. J
First-Aid
It is helpful to have a small first-aid kit on hand such as : band-aides, gauze & tape; iodine ; tea-tree oil; lavender oil ; arnica cream or tablets;
Ointment etc. ( not mandatory* )
These are just suggestions but try not to over-load yourself. We will have some things available at the center as well.
Thongsala is a main town in Koh Phangan in which you can purchase some of the items such mosquito repellent, sunscreen, candles, sunglasses, pocket knife etc. It has ATM Machines as well as Internet Cafes, these are all over the island at this point.
If you have any other tips you wish to share for the group please send them over and we will pass them out.
Positive vibrations and affirmations make traveling a lot Lighter! Smile J
